The Regional Hub of International Cooperation – SDC, through its SIRWASH project, participated actively, reaffirming its commitment to improving living conditions in rural areas. “This International Meeting is a demonstration of our enthusiasm for promoting shared learning and valuable experiences that significantly contribute to the advancement of the water and sanitation sector,” highlighted Kenneth Peralta, SDC regional program officer, in the opening speech. He emphasized the importance of these meetings for strengthening institutional and community capacities, thus enabling the exchange of successful practices and lessons learned among participating countries. This collaborative approach is key to driving sustainable improvements in water and sanitation management in rural areas, reflecting the central objective of the SIRWASH project to improve access to quality and sustainable services.

The National Rural Sanitation Program (PNSR) of Peru and the National Environmental Sanitation Service (SENASA) of Paraguay shared strategies, management models, and lessons learned, demonstrating the commitment of both countries to sustainability and effectiveness in the provision of essential services. During field visits to the regions of Nuevo Tallán, Piura, and Ollantaytambo, Cusco, the Paraguayan delegation received a practical insight into the organization and functioning of the Administrative Boards of Sanitation Services (JASSs). JASSs are key community organizations in water and sanitation management in rural areas of Peru.

The event also involved representatives from the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Cooperation – SDC, and Water For People – Peru, who contributed to dialogue and reflection on how to strengthen and improve effectively and sustainably the management of rural water and sanitation services.

The collaboration between Peru and Paraguay, supported by international entities, shows the value of collaboration and knowledge sharing in solving common problems in rural areas regarding access to water and sanitation. The successful outcome of this meeting augurs a promising future in which cooperation between nations could generate significant innovations and evident improvements in the quality of life of rural communities.
