The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the NGO Libélula implement the Climate Change Management Support Project, which is now in its Phase 2. The project has encouraged journalists and communicators to play an active part, and has produced television programmes that present sustainable activities which correspond to the national climate commitments.
Climate Action Journalism Competition: NDCs in the face of Climate Change
The competition was open in Arequipa from May to July 2021. It encouraged journalists in the region to write articles that lead to public discussion on the importance of adaptation and mitigation measures in the face of climate change.
The project was implemented in partnership with the GORE Arequipa and is based on the Climate Change Law, which highlights the importance of the socialisation and dissemination of strategic information on climate change (Article 18.2) as a means of encouraging environmental awareness, according to the cultural particularities of each region.
The journalists’ submissions considered the progress with climate change measures in the Arequipa region, both in the public and private sector, showing how they reduce greenhouse gas emissions or how they reduce or avoid severe changes, losses and damage triggered by the dangers of climate change, and as a result how they improve people’s lives.
The competition was divided into three categories: articles, television pieces and digital press. The winners were Arequipa journalists Libertad Merma Torres, Alexis Choque Sarmiento, Isabel Álvarez Cabana, Carlos Armejo Champi, Manuel Muriano and Fredy Mamani Condori.
At the award ceremony held in September 2021, Socrates Espinel Centeno, head of the Public Relations Department of the regional government highlighted the work of Arequipa journalists for raising community awareness on climate change measures, highlighting the planting of seedlings, proper use of water and recycling practices. He also pointed out that the work of the Arequipa press will continue to be recognised.
In turn, the Dean of the Arequipa College of Journalists, Robert Silva Fernández, welcomed the agencies’ initiative for recognising journalists’ work particularly in the midst of the pandemic, and asked them to continue providing information to raise public awareness about climate change.
