[Meet and connect with the communities] Building water, sanitation and hygiene solutions with communities in Peru

In April, a Conecta Project technical team travelled to the Ayacucho region in order to contact, learn about and research the conditions and potential of the communities in the region with which it could eventually work.

The team carried out six days of fieldwork and visited eight communities and their productive associations. They gave priority to talking to the communities, which provided an in-depth understanding of their circumstances, and their strengths, weaknesses and potential opportunities related to the community systems and productive processes. The team coordinated with the regional government, which accompanied them throughout their visit to the eight targeted districts: Huamanga, Huanta, La Mar, Vilcas Huamán, Cangallo, Vinchos, Sucre and Víctor Fajardo.

By approaching the communities in this way, the team was able to gather information on four components: i) social, regarding the community; ii) cooperative, regarding their businesses; iii) financial; and iv) water, sanitation and hygiene services in the community. The team made an in-depth analysis of these variables to establish the priorities and choose the two communities that would be in the project: «San José de Churia, Vilcas Huamán» and «Chalco, Los Morochucos».

The team’s next step is to work on socio-economic mapping (in-depth diagnostic), which will provide the information needed for understanding the reality of the two selected communities, for understanding their strengths and opportunities for business improvement, and for having key information needed to design and implement the Conecta Project.
