In order to strengthen awareness and promote responsible practices in caring for our rivers, the United for Water (El Agua Nos Une, EANU) project in Peru joined Rivers Week, an initiative promoted by the Water Resources Technical Secretariat in the Interregional Chillon-Rimac-Lurin Basin, which is part of the National Water Authority (ANA). This week has become a space for collective participation in the conservation of our water resources, seeking active involvement from the population, businesses, and authorities, encouraging them to recognize the need and the multiple benefits of protecting our rivers.
Numerous institutions, organizations, businesses, and local authorities engaged in a range of activities throughout the week. The EANU project actively participated in the week’s central event: the “Simultaneous Cleaning of the Rimac River (Limpieza simultánea del río Rímac),” an activity involving waste collection at various points in the river basin.
The activity took place in the district of Matucana, led by the local municipality, being the first municipality in the upper basin to join the event. The cleanup efforts witnessed significant involvement from environmental promoters in schools, youth, and community organizations. These groups have been actively collaborating with the project on awareness campaigns within local educational institutions.
Additionally, the project coordinated the training on “Consuming Adequate Quality Water (Consumiendo un agua de adecuada calidad)” with stakeholders from the upper Rimac River basin. This training aimed to strengthen the capacities of rural water providers in the communities within the Rimac River basin. Essential information was provided on the proper management of the water quality for human consumption, including the presence of free residual chlorine. Appropriate water chlorination technologies for rural contexts and small communities were also identified.
On the other hand, short awareness videos were produced in collaboration with schoolchildren from Matucana and young people from the University of Callao. These videos were part of an awareness campaign about water and river conservation. Through these messages, the aim was to sensitize and encourage the participation of young audiences in the protection of our water resources.

About the United for Water Project in Peru
The United for Water (EANU) project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE) and is implemented by a consortium composed of the ONGs CARE Peru and SabaVida. The EANU project promotes the sustainable governance of water through coordination with various stakeholders, enhancing the capacities of authorities and companies in water resource management, and raising awareness among civil society about responsible water use.
One of the project’s main efforts is to strengthen the work of institutions related to water management by fostering collaboration with other institutional actors. In addition, the project aims to involve civil society, from children to adults, in developing water culture.
