[Side event] The importance of equal and fair access to climate finance as an issue at the COP26

Only a fraction of climate finance currently reaches local communities or is invested considering their needs. Local communities face unequal access to opportunities and to climate finance services.

The side event «Financing as a means for climate justice that leaves no one behind» took place on 4 November 2021, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 – COP26, held in Glasgow, with the aim of finding solutions and exploring some experiences and lessons learned on financing local climate action. It was a joint effort of the Government of Ecuador, the Voices for Just Climate Action alliance, the civil association TEMNYA21 and the regional project Andes Resilient to Climate Change, an initiative promoted by SDC’s  Global Climate Change and Environment Programme, implemented by Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and the Avina Foundation.

The following is an article by Ana María Vela, communicator of the regional project Andes Resilient to Climate Change, published in January this year on the WeAdapt platform. It summarises the highlights of the event, provides an info graphic containing figures and possible solutions for equitable and fair access to equitable and fair financing for these communities.
