Technological innovations for monitoring drinking water services in rural areas of Peru: A collaboration between the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation, IDB, and Swiss Cooperation

On March 18th, the progress and achievements of an innovative project in Peru aimed at improving drinking water services in rural areas through cutting-edge technologies such as telemetry and an offline application were presented. This project, a collaboration with the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation (MVCS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and with the support of International Cooperation SDC, reflects the commitment to sustainable development and the improvement of the quality of life in the most vulnerable communities.

This initiative includes two essential technological components: telemetry and an offline application, both implemented as part of the SIRWASH program (Sustainable and Innovative Water and Sanitation Services in Rural Areas of Peru). These tools have enhanced the effectiveness and efficiency of water service monitoring, streamlining the gathering and handling of vital data crucial for decision-making in rural sanitation service delivery.

The implementation of these innovations through pilot programs has resulted in the installation of 10 monitoring stations across four regions of Peru, benefiting thousands of residents by enhancing their access to high-quality information. The offline application has enabled data collection in the field by service providers, overcoming connectivity challenges.  Telemetry, on the other hand, has made remote monitoring of water systems possible, ensuring a more proactive and preventive service management.

With a shared vision of closing gaps in access to quality basic services, this pilot underscores the transformative impact of technological innovation in improving living conditions in rural areas. The experiences and lessons learned offer valuable insights for scaling up these technological solutions, marking a promising path towards sustainability and resilience in water and rural sanitation management. Switzerland reaffirms its dedication to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development, public health, and the well-being of the most vulnerable populations.
