Marcapomacocha is in the Junín region, and is a very important area as it is home to the main storage sources of the Alto Mantaro basin, which ensures the water supply for Lima and Callao.
In December 2020, the district municipality of Marcapomacocha, SEDAPAL, Forest Trends and the Swiss Cooperation signed a memorandum of understanding to design and implement water and basic rural sanitation and natural infrastructure projects that contribute to water security, complying with the regulations for the ecosystem services compensation mechanisms in the district.
The memorandum commits SDC to financing the pre-investment studies for basic rural sanitation projects in the villages of Marcapomacocha, Anexo Yantac, Anexo Cuyo, Anexo Sangrar, Anexo Corpacancha, and Anexo Santa Ana, and Forest Trends to financing the design of the natural infrastructure projects and disseminating and publishing information on progress and achievements.
SDC and Forest Trends carried out an exhaustive review of documentation and a survey of technical, social, environmental and institutional issues, prioritising water, soil and topography data. In September 2021, they formulated the technical files of the six focus villages, in accordance with the stipulations of the Investment Programming Office of the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation and in line with the terms of reference.
It is clear from the exploration studies that they need to formulate a comprehensive proposal for the proper management of basic services, including an institutional component, covering promotion, training and health education activities, the micro-watershed management and conservation and care activities upstream of the catchment area.
The next steps correspond to the Municipality of Marcapomacocha, which will be responsible for approving the viability of the rural basic sanitation projects designed by SDC, the technical file of the rural basic sanitation projects designed by SEDAPAL, and together with SEDAPAL negotiating the execution of the rural basic sanitation projects of the Corpacancha and Santa Ana villages with the National Rural Sanitation Programme of the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation. Its Municipal Technical Area will also provide technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of the sanitation projects.
By holding such projects, Switzerland reaffirms its commitment and highlights the value of ecosystem projects, with its conviction that natural infrastructure strengthens sustainability and water availability, and contributes to the quality of life and living conditions of upstream communities, which are valuable and key partners for the project.
