As part of its endeavour to strengthen international cooperation, the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS) showed delegates from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) a successful experience of an implementing unit in charge of a water and sanitation project in the town of El Convento, in Cajamarca.

The investment totalled S/. 2,573,289, and covered 66 basic sanitation units, including a sink, a wash basin, a toilet and a shower. Funding was provided by the National Rural Sanitation Programme (PNSR) of the MVCS, working with implementing units.

The cooperants and representatives of the MVCS visited the project, which is in the district of Llapa in the province of San Miguel. It has been completed and has benefited around 250 inhabitants and two entities in the village of El Convento.

During the visit, the representatives of both international agencies learned about the experiences of the implementing unit that was in charge of executing the project, because it was a model of successful management, and administered well the public investment made in its village.

The implementing units are the beneficiary families themselves. They receive funding from the MVCS for water and sanitation projects, and use the resources to buy the materials and hire the workmen to do the work. They also receive training from the MVCS in construction and management.

After the tour, the international representatives expressed their satisfaction with the MVCS leadership and its management of this type of project, and congratulated the beneficiary community on the project’s implementation and sustainability.
